SMITH The Saluda County School District is taking steps to ensure its students will enter positive learning environments without facing risk factors such as violence, drugs and alcohol. The district was awarded the federal Safe Students Initiative grant, a four-year grant. Saluda was one of the 29 districts selected out of the 422 that applied.

Project director Shelia Whittington joined the district in October. She has operated many federal grants since 1997 and has worked as a director of First Steps, director of 21st Century Grants in Georgia but based in South Carolina and Heritage Community Services in Aiken. Already the initiative is well under way, according to Whittington. has stepped up the plate and worked hard, rolling up their she said. intend to see the Saluda students get a great education and the communities kept Some goals of the initiative include reducing violence, keeping kids healthy socially and emotionally and improving student behavior and academic performance.

The district plans to achieve these goals through violence, alcohol and drug prevention programs, after-school programs focusing on tutoring and character-building and parental support. Using grant money, several new people have been hired: a truancy officer, a school resource officer, parent liaison, two parent educators, an alcohol, tobacco and other drugs counselor, and two mental health counselors all positions she said she hopes to keep on board when the grant ends. Whittington said there are plans to hire a third counselor soon. The counselors will rotate schools. The district has also formed partnerships with other agencies, including the Saluda County Office, Saluda County First Steps and Beckman Mental Health.
