Associated Press COLUMBIA A bill that requires police in South Carolina to check immigration status and mandates all businesses check their hires through a federal online system received final legislative approval Tuesday. The House voted 69-43 to agree with the changes and send the bill to Gov. Nikki Haley, whose spokesman confirmed she will sign it. House Speaker Bobby Harrell noted South Carolina is the latest in a string of states to place similar requirements on law enforcement. Washington refuses to effectively support our law enforcement officers by enforcing immigration laws, it is left up to the states to stand up and do what is said Harrell, R-Charleston.

is exactly what South Carolina did today by making sure our officers have the enforcement tools they need during this time of federal The bill expands on a 2008 South Carolina law which at the time was considered one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal immigration. It requires officers to call federal immigration officials if they suspect someone is in the country illegally. The question must follow an arrest or traffic stop for something else. The measure bars officers from holding someone solely on that suspicion. Opponents argue the bill will encourage racial profiling and lead to lawsuits.

Beyond the possibility of lawsuits by civil rights groups, the measure allows residents to sue local governments that bar or restrict officers from complying. setting up another avenue for racial said Rep. Nikki Haley to a wrap-up agenda. They wanted debate on a bill that would create a Cabinet-level Department of Administration to oversee much of the bureaucracy. They needed 31 of the 46 members to vote to add a bill to a list dominated by the $6 billion spending plan, redrawing election district lines and dealing with vetoes. But when the vote was tallied, they mustered only a 25-17 vote. Supporters were trying to regroup.

Haley made restructuring a key issue this session. As Legislators prepared to adjourn for a week on June 2, Haley ordered them back into session and told the Senate to take up House-passed legislation creating the Department of Administration, allowing governors to appoint the education superintendent, merging the prisons and parole agencies and electing governors and lieutenant governors on the same ticket.

But Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell challenged the order. A divided state Supreme Court agreed with him. When the Legislature returned last week, the McConnell introduced the agenda-changing measure, and Tuesday was the first time it was debated. Sen. Gerald Malloy said the Senate have time to take up the measure and deal with the budget and redistricting.
