The past four weeks are called the worst period for forest fires in the 20-year history of the Forestry Commission.

Abbeville High School Athletes Given Banquet Abbeville, March 6. -(Special)A banquet was given the Athletic Association of the Abbeville High School held here Friday night at the High School dining room. The supper was sponsored by the Pavent -Teachers Association. The dining room, was decorated in colors team, garnet and gold and an elaborate menu of tomato juice cocktail, roast tom turkey, rice gravy, dressing, baby lima beans, cranberry salad, hot rolls, butter, iced tea and cherry pie a la mode, was Cecil Woolbright, graduate of Abbeville High School captain of last year's University of South Carolina football team, was introduced, along with trustees and their wives. Coach Weems Baskin of the University was principal speaker.

Other features the program carried out ofy Toastmaster Tommy Hite with invocation by S. 8. Moffatt, team captains were introduced aS follows: football, Gus Smith, captain, and Olin McCurry, co-captain; boys basketball, James Blum, captain; girls basketball, Jean Patterson, captain. During the evening a number of awards were presented, to Coach Mac Bagwell an award of a check for fifty dollars, a United States Bond to Coach Tommy Hite and to H. Q.

Lever, who will take over April 1 as manager of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, was in town Saturday with Mrs.

Lever. They were in preparation for the move from Jesup, to Greenwood. In a story in The Atlanta Journal yesterday Mr. Lever was praised by the president of the Jesup Chamber of Commerce. Here is the story in part: Dr.

T. G. Ritch, president of the Jesup organization in making the announcement, expressed deep regret at losing Mr. Lever, but predicted success for him on nis return his native state. Mr.

Lever will assume his new duties April 1. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Lever, of Rock Hill, he graduated at Wofford college, Spartanburg, and served in World War II. Coming here in July, 1948, he built the local chamber into one of the most effective organizations in the country for a town of this size.

An aggressive and diplomatic leader, he, took 8- leading role in many business and civic accomplishments here. The chamber's "News Letter" WAS selected in 1949 as the second, best publication in its class the United States. Mr. Lever is affiliated with a great many chambers of commerce and highway organizations, also with the American Legion and the Kiwanis club. DEATHS And FUNERALS MRS.

OSCAR T. BRADBERRY Abbeville, March Bessie Horton Bradberry, 58, died at the family residence on the AbbevilleCalhoun Falls highway Saturday morning at 9:20 following long period of declining health. She was a life long resident Abbeville county, the daughter of the late T. M. and Crattie Lou Collins Horton.

Surviving are her husband: Oscar T. Bradberry, of the home, five daughters: Mrs. Clyde a Hicks, Mrs. Leonard Russum and Miss lian Bradberry, all of Abbeville; Mrs. Robert Hicks and Miss Doris Bradberry, Anderson; seven sons, Clarence, Rufus, George and Ansel Bradberry, all Abbeville, and Elbert H.

Bradberry of Princess Anne, two stepchildren, Mrs. Thelma Stalnaker, Columbia, and Alvin A. Bradberry, Calif. Six sisters, Mrs. Lucy Davis, Mrs.

Cora McCurry, Abbeville, Mrs. Lessie Ellenberg, Greenwood, Mrs. Emnma Spence, McCormick, Mrs. Alma Hilley, Newberry, Mrs. Clara Hilburn, Parksville; and two brothers, W.

H. Horton, Abbeville and E. H. Horton, Jacksonville, also survive. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Holiness Church 1n Abbeville Sunday at 3 the Rev.

Ralph Taylor 'officiating, assisted by the Rev, Drayton Moore and the Rev. G. T. Satcher. Burial was in Melrose cemetery.

Bartley, 79, died at his residence Friday night after a long period of falling was health a son and of a the recent late stroke. Funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday atfernoon from Mercantile Funeral home by the Rev. A. D. Croft and the Rev. John S.

Wimbish. Interment followed in Eastview cemetery. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss. Sallie Reel; three sons, Harry R. Bartley of Winnsboro, Albert D.

Bartley of Edgefield and Claude Bartley of Washington, D. one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy M. Bartley of Mt. Rainier, and three grandchildren.

Southern Bell To Install 43,000 New Phones In SC Charleston, March 6. -(P)- Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company expects to install 43,000 new telephones in South Carolina this year. That's part of the company's sev-, en and a half million dollar expansion program for the year. New exchanges will be established at the Isle of Palms, Bath in Aiken county, Eastover in Richland county and Joanna in Laurens county. During the latter part of the period, rain and sleet relieved the situation somewhat. Tired fire fighters had a chance to rest and to repair work-worn fire fighting tools and equipment. Counties hardest hit during the three week period were: Florence, Horry, Berkeley, Williamsburg, Georgetown, Charleston, Hampton, Jasper Orangeburg. State Forester Charles 'H. Flory said today that conditions now seen better than they have severat weeks, but warned that fires could break out again.

"It is still unsafe to do any brush, field or trash burning. Anyone that he must burn should wait until after a good soaking rain. Abney Mills Give. $10,000 To YMCA In Anderson Anderson, March 6 A gift of $10,000 to the Anderson YMCA by the Abney Mills will make it possible for the to begin operations at its next location virtually out of debt and in position to conduct an extensive program among the young people, fulfilling a community need of long standing. "The gift by Abney Mills is a splendid gesture, and one which will long be remembered, not only by backers of the YMCA movement but especially by the youth of Anderson to whom it will mean so much," commented, the the Rev. Plaintiff had brought action seeking to be paid $25 a share instead of a $5 dividend. He alleged that Brandon is. building up an "unwarranted accumulation of corporate earnings."
