Ransom raced around the course in a late practice round yesterday, "Not even paying attention to what's par." But he agreed with such others as Lloyd Mangrum, Jack Burke, and Middlecoff that Mount Pleasant Course is going to be a tough test physically. They all mentioned with groans the long holes, bills arid unusually long walks from greens to the next tees. The course measures 6395 yards with par of 72 for 18 holes. Also like the others.

Ransom commented, on the big greens. "It's go ing to be easy to three-putt these," said Ransom, and Middlecoff predicted that- birdies are going to come hard. Frlck was right in not letting him get away alth it." From what the boys are saying today, there appear to be a number of reasons for the decline of Brooklyn fortunes in the National league. Manager Burt Shotton has made too many mistakes In the heat of battle, being out-thought by more alert rivals; some of the players do not like each other; President Branch Rickey has insisted upon carying too much dead wood in the form of rookies who are not yet ready to help carry the. load. All of which may be true. But the thought occurs that when the final reckoning is made and the league champs are not In the World 8erles again, there are those who will mention to Rickey the pUyers he let get away the past winter.

Take fiamJethroe the fleet Negro centerfielder with the Boston Braves. He has done more to keep the Braves In the first division than all the' sluggers they got from the Oiants. Or take Chico Carrasquel, the sensational young shortstop with the Chicago White Sox. Or Preston Ward, the Chlcago Cubs' promising first sacker, or Irv Noren, a joo hitter in Washington's outfield.
