Since that day In 1943 when the first Women Marines reported to Camp Lejeune for recruit training, their number grew until it reached a peak strength of 18.838 during World War II. Serving In hundreds of various capacities well lived up to their by-word, "Free a Marine to Fight." In recognition of this service, the Women Marines were authorised by Congress to June 1948 as a regular component of the United States Marine Corps. Under the command of Colonel Julia E. Haroblet, the Women Marines today are still performing a vital role In the Corps in the United States and abroad in the defense of our country. By performing vital jobs in such fields as administration, disbursing, motor transport and communications, they are releasing Marine for duty In one of the combat' units of the Corps.

Today the need for women In the Marine Corps la as great as ever.
