Erskine played without Kirk Busby, so it moved midfielder Peter Lewis to sweeperback. Lewis was instrumental in preserving the shutout as. College of Charleston fell to 5-5-1.

Sophomore Brandon Murray and freshman Kevin Knight played keys roles in the win as well. Murray hit a shot 29 minutes into the game which Campbell deflected off the goalpost. Charleston's best opportunity to score came when Javier Vivaco nailed a direct kick off the crossbar five minutes into the second half. 1 DUE WEST Andrew Burts scored with 4:25 left in overtime Saturday to give Erskine's Flying Fleet a 1-0 victory over the College of Charleston. Burts scored on a breakaway, hauling in a long pass from Frank Mathews, beating one defender, and kicking the ball past charging goalkeeper Doug Campbell.

Erskine broke a three-game losing streak to the Cougars, who are coached by former Fleet coach Ralph Lundy. Still, Erskine leads the all-time series 15-3-2. Sophomore Jennifer Wilson of Greenwood was seventh in 22:05 and Kelly Martin of Summerville was 21st in 24:34.

Because Lander didn't have the required five runners, it was not eligible for a team score. LMU's Cybil O'Non won the women's race in 20:30 and led her team to first place with a low 33 points. Covenent College was second with 100 points, and was followed by Warren Wilson 110 and Bel-mont-Abbey 110, Wofford 146, Salem College 214, Erskine 227, and Tusculum 269. Lander has a week off before competing at Erskine College on Thursday, Oct. 17.

"I think the week off will give our healthy runners some time to add some more intensity to their workouts without having to worry about racing and will give our injured runners that much more time to recover," said Stoner. "I hope we can get our two injured women back into the swing of things in time for the Francis Marion Invitational on Oct. 19." Erskine's finishes were as follows: Brian Davenport, 15th, Charles Collins, 37th, Ridgeway Addison, 38th, Robert Berry, 46th, and Mike Evans, 54th, 38:43. Grant Reagin Cambridge senior contribute to 10-0 win Friday Unbeaten Cougars win easily again The total has now reached 54-1.

That's how much Cambridge Academy's varsity soccer team has cutscored its five opponents this season. The Cougars ran their record to 54 Friday with a 10-0 rout of Newberry Academy. Cambridge has scored 40 goals in its last three games. McClendon led the way for the Cougars with four goals, two unassisted. Arthur McCallum added two goals, and Tendai Mufuka, Tripp Padgett, Grant Reagin and Melinda O'Hare one apiece.

O'Hare's goal was a penalty kick called on a handball off a McClendon shot. "It was well-placed. It was a great shot," Cambridge first-year coach Frank Haynes said of O'Hare's goal. McClendon added three assists, Greg Lance had two assists, and McCallum and Padgett one apiece. Cambridge had 45 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, and Just one foul and one offsides call.

"We didn't play that well in the first half," said Haynes, a former Lander soccer Most Valuable Player. "I got on their case. They could have done plenty better. But they did a good job in the second half." Cambridge will go to Union Academy Friday at 4. The Cougars hammered Union 17-0 here on Sept.

Hughes, a Senator freshman, finished sixth at the 21st annual Warren Wilson College Invitational cross country meet and led lander to an overall second-place finish.

Hughes toured the five-mile course in 30 minutes exactly, his best time of the season. "Brad has been our number two or three runner consistently all season and it was good to see that he could handle being number one," said Lander coach Bob Stoner. "He started making his move after the three-mile mark and held on a strong finish." Mark Moore, of Lincoln Memorial (Tn.) University won the race with a time of 29:01 leading the Railsplitters to victory. LMU runners placed first, second, third, fifth and eighth to capture the meet with a low score of 19 points. "It was basically a pretty one-sided game for us." Lander outshot the Cobras 17-3 and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Dan Clift had six saves for Coker. Noel Husbands had no saves for Lander. Both goals came in the second half for Lander, which improved to 9-2 overall. The Senators are ranked No. 10 in the NAIA national poll. Lander was 2-0 for the week, including a 1-0 victory at NCAA Division II No. 13-ranked USC-Spartanburg Wednesday.

The next poll is due out Monday at 4 p.m. Linder scored 3:24 into the second half off an assist from Eric Magera. Cvitkovic's goal came at the 78:58 mark off a Jason Peek assist. "Their tactics were to play real earned $73,225. He didn't think Burton would make it to the checkered flag.

"We definitely knew he couldn't go that far," Gant said, "that be was going to be short" Ken Schrader finished second and Jimmy Hensley third. Tommy Ellis, who started 37th, was fourth and Tom Peck, who started 35th, finished fifth. By the time 50 laps were completed, five caution flags were posted. It seemed there was as much sheet metal torn off cars as there was left on. By that 50-lap mark, seven cars were done for the day.

It took only two laps to bring out the first caution. Morgan She-pard spun out and hit the wall between turns 3 and 4, and in the scramble to avoid that spin, Hut Stricklin's Chevrolet and Steve Grissom's Oldsmobile were heavily damaged and were towed off the track. The second caution waved when Cecil Eunice went into a spin in turn 1 after Jack Sprague blew an engine. The third caution involved Dale Earnhardt and Phil Parsons, and NASCAR officials ordered Earnhardt to park his car behind the pit wall for rough driving. Not even ihe caution periods were safe.

After Dave Rezendes spun out on lap 96 to bring out the eighth caution, Mike McLaughlin's Oldsmobile caught fire in turn four. He was not hurt. Shawna Robinson, the daughter-in-law of NASCAR great David Pearson, had to be removed from her car in lap 129 after it hit the wall going into the first turn and caught fire. CONCORD, N.C. (AP) Some guys get all the breaks.

After a September in which he won four Winston Cup races and two Grand National races, Harry Gant started October with a victory in the All Pro Auto Parts 300 Saturday. His latest triumph came at the expense of Ward Burton, who dominated the race but gambled on a caution flag that never flew. "The luck that we had today was pure luck," Gant said. "We have been lucky in about three of the races we've won," said Gant, who posted his seventh NASCAR victory in his last eight races. Gant's luck in Winston Cup races was snapped at four victories last weekend at North Wilkea-boro where the brakes went on his Buick and Dale Earnhardt took the victory.

He ran his Grand National string to three by winning at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the first event of a two-race weekend. The 51-year-old Gant also won a qualifying race Friday to make the field for the Saturday run. Burton was pulling away from a wreck-ravaged field and its survivors, but he also was running on the hope that another caution flag would allow him to pit for fuel. He failed to pit for gasoline and tires after a caution on lap 125. When he needed one more caution flag eight already had flown he couldn't get one.

"Burton's car was strong and be would have been very hard to beat if he'd pitted and come back out." Burton's car sputtered along the frontstretch and ran out of gas on the backbtretch on lap 188, 12 laps from the end. Four laps earlier, Jeff Purvis' car went into a spin out of the fourth turn. The Burton pit crew waved frantically at the start-finish line in hopes of getting yellow flag, but had no luck there, either.

All Pro 300 "We just figured there would be another caution. It's nobody's fault," Burton said. "We just made the wrong decision. The car was just super." Gant, starting 33rd, had chased Burton for 50 laps after Dale Jar-rett's car dropped out of contention with suspension problems. When Burton finally pulled into the pits, Gant cruised into the lead and earned a $25,000 bonus Burton, the pole-sitter who led for 162 of the 200 laps, lost a $40,000 bonus for his miscalculation and finished 12th.

Had he won, Burton would have gotten $123,870 instead of the $38,450 he claimed. "If we'd just had another gallon or two of gas, we would have been OK," Burton said. Gant led for only 18 laps, but victim of a broken camshaft in one race and lost tire in another. "If it can happen to me, it usually happens at Charlotte," Earnhardt said. "You never know what's going to happen to you." A fifth title would move Earnhardt into contention to challenge Petty's remarkable record of seven Winston Cup championships.

This is Rudd's first chance to win it all. His best finish was fifth in 1986. "When you're in a points race like we are, it's a fine line on trying to get better," he said. "You can't afford to gamble too much." Earnhardt knows what it's like to be following the leader this late in the season. "Last year, we were behind at this time, working hard trying to get back up," be said.

"I know what the pressure is like when you're behind, but you can catch up. We did it last year, so I'm not going to give up now." SHOP THE ADS DAILY FOR REAL BUYS GOLFERS! "Some people say they'd like to have a tough year like that, but we did have to overcome some bad luck." Rudd is feeling the pressure. "Right now, Dale's definitely got us in a much bigger hole than we'd like to be in," he said.
