In 1809, author Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston. In 1825, Ezra Daggett and his nephew, Thomas Kensett, obtained "a patent for their process of storing food in tin cans. In 1853, Verdi's opera "II Trovatore" premiered in Rome. In 1861, Georgia seceded from the Union. In 1937, millionaire Howard Hughes established a transcontinental air record when he flew his monoplane from Los Angeles to Newark, N.J., in seven hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds.

In 1955, a presidential newsconference was filmed for television for the first time, with the permission of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1977, in one of his final acts as president, Gerald R. Ford pardoned Iva Toguri D'Aquino of Chicago World War II's "Tokyo Rose." Ten years ago: In his State of the Union message, President Gerald R. Ford called on Congress to reduce federal taxes, curb spending and forgo expensive new programs to bring what he called a new realism to relations between government and the people.

And, dark-horse candidate Jimmy Carter, a former Georgia governor, scored a stunning victory in the Iowa caucuses over others seeking the Democratic nomination for president. Five years ago: President-elect Ronald Reagan rehearsed his inaugural speech for presentation the next day and invited President Jimmy Carter to serve as a special envoy to meet the American hostages in West Germany if Iran released them after Reagan assumed the presidency. Carter accepted. The 52 Americans were released minutes after Reagan took the oath of office. One year ago: Lebanese Prime Minister Rashid Karami announced after a meeting in Beirut with U.S.

Ambassador Reginald Bartholomew that Lebanon's government would try to obtain the release of five Americans kidnapped in Beirut, apparently by a shadowy group calling itself Islamic Jihad. He was a son of the late E.L.T. and Callie Davis O'Dell. He was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation and was a member and former deacon and treasurer of Calvary Baptist Church, where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class. He was a member of Ware Shoals Masonic Lodge. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.

Charles (Hazel) Hines of Columbia; a brother, James O'Dell of Blowing Rock, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Mae Davis of Ware Shoals; two grandchildren; anf four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Parker-White Funeral Home Chapel in Ware Shoals with the Rev. Hal Freeman and the Rev.

Jack Hatchell officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family is at the residence. MRS. MARY JO BROWN ANDERSON Mrs.

Mary Jo Burnett Brown, 51, of River Street, formerly of Ware Shoals, died Thursday. She was a member of Hodges United Methodist Church. Surviving are her mother Mrs. Bertha Burnett of Belton; a son. Art Brown of Hodges; a daughter, Vickie Proctor of Greenwood; two sisters, Elaine Ferguson of Belton and Hazel Hughes of Greenwood; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Dr. Loyd Melton officiating. The family is at the home of Elaine Ferguson, 301 Chandler Drive, Belton.

Parker-White Funeral Home of Ware Shoals was in charge. CARL J. PHILLIPS COLUMBIA Carl J. Phillips, 49, of Fulmer Road, Blythewood, husband of Mrs. Patricia Ann Morgan Phillips, died Friday.

Born in Rutherford County, N.C., he was a son of Mrs. Lois Ruppe Phillips Everette and the late Samuel Phillips. He was retired from the Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a clerk with the Veterans Administration Regional Office in Columbia. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Greenwood; are two sons, Alan Phillips of Blythewood, and Kevin Phillips, U.S.

Army, stationed in Hawaii; two daughters, Mrs. Carla Gunter of Columbia and Miss Rhonda Phillips of Blythewood; his stepfather, Lum Everette of Greenwood; four brothers. Mack, Floyd and Jim Phillips of Forest City, N.C., and Bud Phillips of Greenwood; two sisters, Mrs. Carol Arrowood of Charlotte and Mary J. Phillips of Forest City and grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Pine View Baptist Church in Blythewood with the Rev. Jack Yonce and the Rev. Calvin Snel-grove officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.

GERALD LANDRY COOPER WARE SHOALS Gerald Landry Cooper, 33, of Roanoke, died Friday in an automobile accident. Formerly of Ware Shoals, he was a son of Mrs. Zola Mae Landry Cooper of Roanoke, La. and the late Horace L. Cooper.

He was in construction work and had attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Ware Shoals. Surviving, in addition to his mother of the home; are a son, Shane Cooper; a daughter. Crystal Cooper; a brother, Samuel Lee Cooper, of Lake Arthur, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

Born in Lockport, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Charles J. and Ethel McGrath Degnan. She had lived in Columbia since 1959 and had served on the board of the Women's Club of Columbia and was a member of the Hoe and Rake Garden Club, the Literary Discussion Club and the Thursday Bridge Club. Surviving, in addition to her husband ofOrlando, Fla. are two sons, James E.

Johnston Jr. of Columbia and Joseph E. Johnston of Greenwood; two daughters, Mrs. John G. Walther of Wood-bridge, Vai and Ms.

Leanne Johnston of Columbia; and grandchildren. Services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Father Francis F. Travis officiating.

MISS CATHERINE ABBIE HOLMES MOUNTVILLE Miss Catherine Abbie Holmes, 93, of Route 1, Lisbon community, Mountville, died Friday in Laurens District Hospital. Born in the Lisbon community of Laurens County, she was a daughter of the fate Augustine Re id and Molly Clatworthy Holmes. She was a retired registered nurse, having worked at Laurens District Hospital, in Beaufort and in private homes.

She was a member of Lisbon Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two brothers, Reid Augustine Holmes of Apopka, Florida and Joseph Simpson Holmes of Springfield; and several nieces ana nephews. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Lisbon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr.

BLACKWELL. HONEA PATH Richard Thomas Blackwell, 66, of 430 Shirley husband of Florine Nicholson Blackwell, died Saturday at the Anderson Memorial Hospital. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Richard Benton and Essie Martin Blackwell. He was a retired carpenter, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home; are three sons, Ronnie Blackwell, of Waldo, Stanley Blackwell of Tuscon, and Artie Blackwell of Honea Path; three brothers, Lucius B. Blackwell of West Palm Beach, Reuben B. Blackwell of Ware Shoals and Joel L. Black-well, of Honea Path; two sisters, Mrs. Margie C.

Jordan and Mrs. Eunice B. Ridge, both of Honea Path; and six grandchildren. Services will be announced by Pruitt Funeral Home of Honea Path. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Honea Path Rescue Squad.

The family is at the home. SAM "BUSTER" DEAN Sam "Buster" Dean, 86, husband of Mrs. Caroline C. Dean, died Friday at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Andrew and Estelle Watson Dean, and was the last survivor of his immediate family.

He was a member of Mt. Pisgan Bapist Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife of Greenwood; are three sons, William Charles and Larry Dean, all of Greenwood; a stepson, Robert Adams of Greenwood; four daughters, Mrs. Katie Anderson, Mrs. Patricia A.

Anthony, Miss Annie R. Dean and Miss Mary T. He was a retired printer of Riegel Textile Corporation, a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of Princeton Masonic Lodge, No. 129.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home; are a son, Marion Austin Scott of Merritt Island, a brother, William Harold Scott of Rock Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Washington of Georgetown, Mrs. Mabel Hanks of Anderson and Mrs. Corrine McKinney of Decatur, four grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. CARY L. COTHRAN PELZER Cary Lee Cothran, 74, of Route 2, Augusta Road, Lickville community, husband of Mrs. Othella Woods Cothran, died Thursday. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Lola McMillan Cothran. He was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation and was a U.S.

Army veteran of World War II. He was educated in the Honea Path public schools and Clemson College and was a member of the Lyndon Moore American Legion Post No. 51. He was a member of Daventon Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and deacon and member of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Mrs.

Fred (Kay) Mattison of Belton; four sisters, Mrs. Sara Tumblin of Ware Shoals, Mrs. Ruby Bozard of Bennettsville, Mrs. Ollie Phillips of Greenville and Mrs. Robbie Gambrell of Honea Path; a brother, Ralph Cothran of Honea Path; and two grandchildren.

Services were at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Daventon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Walter B. Fortune, the Rev.

O.L. McGin-nis and the Rev. James Dyar officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews.

Cleo "Jolie" Powell Young, died Friday at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta, Ga. Born in Abbbeville County, he was a son of Mrs. Allie Mae Boyd Young and the late Sam Eugene Young. He was a self-employed building contractor, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Due West Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Due West; are a son, Barry Eugene Young of Due West; a daughter, Mrs. Monnie Lisa Hunt of Abbeville; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph M. (Ginny) McClellan of Greenwood, Mrs. Grady (Mabel) Oates, of Bartow, and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Due West Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Andrews and the Rev. Mark Ar-rington officiating. Burial will be in the Due West Baptist Church cemetery.
