Main 105 Little Mountain Rd 223-7511 223-6120 543-2314 Mrs. Bush says jump will be last for her husband YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz. (AP) George Bush was flushed, watchers were impressed, and Barbara Bush was adamant after the former president safely completed the second parachute jump of his life. With ground crews whispering through microphones into his ear, the 72-year-old former Navy pilot fulfilled a wartime promise to himself, jumping from a plane over the Arizona desert under a rainbow-colored parachute. It was far more serene than his leap to safety from a disabled bomber half a century ago.

"It was wonderful. I'm a new man and I go home exhilarated," he said Tuesday after returning to earth. Bush was forced to bail out of his Navy bomber in the Pacific during World War II. He promised himself then that one day he would make a jump for fun. Apparently it will be his last.

Asked whether he'll do it again, spokesman Jim McGrath responded: "Absolutely not. Mrs. Bush won't allow Tuesday's feat was historic, not only in that Bush is the only former president to make such a jump but for other former members of the military, many of whom winter at nearby Yuma. "I'm impressed," said Ted Seifert, 66, a retired Air Force sergeant from LaPine, Ore. "I wish I could be with him.

"I know I made a few mistakes," he added, mimicking pulling on his harness. Bush leaped from a civilian twinengine airplane at 12,500 feet, accompanied by eight Gold Knights and a civilian from the U.S. Parachute Association, then fell freely until he deployed his parachute at 4,500 feet.

He was in the air for a total of nine. minutes, wearing a white jumpsuit under a borrowed orange, yellow and blue civilian sport parachute. His World War I1 jump had already made him the only president to bail out of an airplane. "I am mightily impressed," President Clinton, still using crutches after falling on a flight of steps, said in Washington. Bush's first jump from an airplane came on Sept.

Missing girls returned to Michigan with help from some college students KALAMAZOO, Mich.

(AP) Hours after eating dinner with three men and two young girls, some college students vacationing in Daytona Beach, saw pictures of the children flash on the television screen. They had just shared a table with three men accused of kidnapping Teresa Hainer, 9, and her 6-year-old sister, Jessica, from their tiny Michigan hometown of Galesburg. "It shocked all of us," said Harvard student Loh-Sze Leung, 21. "It all seemed to fit together, The names matched, the car matched, the description matched." The students immediately called authorities, who had received reports of other sightings in Florida. One of the men, Ronald Stafford, the girls' former baby sitter, said "they were planning on staying in Florida for the rest of their student Richard Conway recalled.

The girls were rescued by police Tuesday morning, ending a fourday nationwide search. They returned to Michigan as dozens of people applauded and yelled, "Welcome home." "You didn't get a tan. What grandmother Olivia Hainer joked as she hugged the girls what we did and what we can still do," said Milton Clarke, 71, a disabled Navy veteran from San Diego who came to watch, Bush had help: two jump masters holding onto his harness until he opened his chute safely, and half a dozen people including wife Barbara running to cushion his landing. Medical emergency personnel were also standing by on the ground. Asked how he felt, Bush gave a thumbs up and said: "Like Despite coaching from the ground, Bush landed about 40 yards from his target at the Army's Yuma Proving Ground, the sprawling base where the Golden Knights, the GEORGE BUSH makes dream jump after they arrived by private plane at the Kalamazoo airport.

Medical tests were planned for the girls, but, "we're told by agents at the scene they're none the worse for wear," said Joe Martinolich, head of the FBI in Michigan. The FBI says the odyssey of Jessica and Teresa started in tears Friday as they stepped off a school bus and reluctantly entered a car driven by Stafford, their former sitter with a juvenile record for sexual assault.
