This time, though, instead of being a silent witness to change, the building itself undergoing the change. Steve Welch, a 34-year old at torney, is remodeling the top floor of the old clothing store into office space for his law firm. "It's amazing bow these old buildings can accommodate our new technology," said Welch, who moved into the new facility Thursday.

"Tne real thing that attracted me to it is the history," Welch said, "the fact that it's one of the oldest buildings in Greenwood. And the Rosenberg family is one of the most respected names in Greenwood." Abraham Rosenberg moved his clothing store, the Old Reliable, into the building in the 1880s. It was the first store in the Upstate to sell clothes at a fixed price. Other merchants were still using the barter system to sell their goods. There were several merchan dising innovations at the turn of the century that the Rosenberg family utilized here," Welch said.

The Old Reliable was also one of the first stores to employ female clerks and bookkeepers. when Abraham Rosenberg died in 1920, the store was handed down to his son, Ernest. He was discharged as a colonel and was known as the "Colonel" to area residents from then on. As Greenwood changed from a 19th century village to a 20th century city, Rosenberg's store remained a landmark to the town's inhabitants. "This store was like an institution," Welch said.

"Everybody bought their clothes here in the 50s and 60s." Welch noted that, among other things, he's found newspaper ads from years ago in the old building that brought home the changes abduction site at the time." We even talked to Ted Bundy, and Henry Lee Lucas from Texas A task force of local and regional authorities labored over the case, but "as time progressed the leads became fewer and fewer" and the task force was dissolved, he said. Authorities from South Carolina, Florida and Virginia planned to "interview him relating to unsolved homicides in their jurisdictions," Connard said. The Chicago Tribune, citing unnamed sources, reported that Kerpan implicated himself in other murders in several states. Connard declined to comment on the report, saying: "It's just standard procedure to interview somebody who had been on the run for 13 years." The case had baffled authorities for years. Lisa Slusser left her Waukegan home on Aug. 24, 1977, and rode her bicycle to a vacant field near a highway about two blocks away to collect acorns and weeds to feed to her pet rabbit.

Her family reported her missing. After a two-day effort in which more than 100 searchers combed the area, her body was found on a dirt road near the Des Plaines River about 11 miles northwest of the city. Police said at the time that she had been abducted, sexually as saulted, stabbed 19 times and her skull fractured. Spartanburg Co. deputies may get seized drug funds to buy auto pistols SPARTANBURG (AP) Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies may soon be behind semi-automatic handguns instead of in front of them, thanks to confiscated drug money and property the sheriff wants to use to boost the department's fire power.

Sheriff Bill Coffey has proposed using the special fund of assets confiscated from convicted drug dealers to pay half the cost of the high-capacity pistols. He said the guns will give law officers "the edge in crisis confrontations." Coffey said it would be the first time the county has supplied its law officers with weapons. He said he believes officers should not have to provide their own handguns, as is currently the case. Total cost of the gun purchase is about $109,000. The gun purchase exemplifies how the special fund is helping put drug traffickers behind ban without increasing the financial burden.

"(The drug fund) is a tremendous savings to the taxpayers Coffey said. "It's just a good idea to take the profits from drun deal. ing and turn it around to use it to enhance and fund law enforcement efforts." The Sheriffs Office has collected $66,000 since July from the drug fund, $22,000 of which has been used to purchase Pistols, page 13) said Sherry Roberts, a clerk at Beach Side. Gary D. Kerpan, 40, of Inman, S.C, was being held without bond Sunday in the Lake County Jail, after being transferred from Spartanburg, S.C, said jail officer Wendell Russell. Kerpan was charged Friday with murder in the stabbing and bludgeoning death of Lisa Slusser, who in 1977 disappeared from this city about 40 miles north of Chicago, said Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Ralph Connard.

Kerpan also was questioned in Spartanburg about unsolved homicides in three southern states before being brought back to Illinois, Connard said. Kerpan, a furniture mover who lived in Waukegan at the time of the girl's death, was arrested after he called FBI agents in South Carolina on Thursday and said he wanted to talk about a murder in Illinois years ago, Connard said. "It was a crime of opportunity," he said. Hill said. Last year, film companies spent about $8 million in South Carolina shooting at least 10 major projects in seven counties. That includes "Coup de Ville," a major motion picture that features the Ritz Restaurant on U.S. 29 North near Pelzer, to be released this spring, and "Modern Love," directed and produced in Columbia by actor-director Hobby Benson. Also, three television movies were filmed in South Carolina last year, including "Unspeakable Acts," which aired on ABC last week, and several television commercials for companies such as Coca Cola and Honda.
