George Brooks HONEA RATH George Washington Brooks, 73 of 200 Church St husband of the late Mildred Lyons'' Brooks, died Dec. 20, 1997, at National Health Care11, of Anderson. He was a son of the late Joseph Whitt and Minnie Pierce Brooks.

He was a retired supervisor from3 Clark-Schwebel and was a member of Keowee Bap-i3 list Church. Surviving are a brother, Lee Grant Brooks of Cal-'" noun Falls; two sisters, Clara Campbell and Helen rji Robinson, both of Honea Path; several nieces and nephews. died Dec. 18, 1997, atyg Dom Veterans Hospital. He was a victim of lung cancer and donated his body to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He was an Air Force veteran, retiring after rp 24 years. He was a member of O'Neal Street United Methodist Church, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Fpreign Wars and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Turner Wessels Ben- ton of the home; his mother, Pauline Clopton Berry of Newberry; a sister, Jo Ann Moates of Silverstreet; a half brother, Brooks Berry of North Augusta; a stepson, Fred Wessels IV of Richmond, a step- daughter, Rosalie Wessels King of Guyton, and a 'I step grandson. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at O'Neal Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship ,0 hall after the service. 19, 1997, at Saluda Nursing' Center. Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late James Alexander and Mattie Rebecca Matthews Ridgell. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and the Helping Hands Sunday School Class. Surviving are a son, LaFonde Lindler of Saluda; two daughters, Betty Jo Bozard of Greenwood and Nona Claire Dunham of Fairhope, five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m.

today at Sardis Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Joyner and the Rev. Earle Hartley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends Saturday at Ramey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, Route 4, Saluda, S.C. 29138. Patricia W. Sease CLINTON Patricia Williams Sease, 54, of 701 Calvert died Dec. 18, 1997, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.

Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of Margaret Rasor Williams and the late Fred Williams. She was a graduate of Lander University and received her master's degree from Converse College. She taught for 17 years at Clinton High School and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Surviving are her husband, George H. Sease of the home; two daughters, Kimberly Bastian of Charlotte, N.C., and Shawn Forbes of Vienna, her mother of Cross Hill; a brother, Michael Williams of Cross Hill; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at St John's Lutheran Church with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. The family received friends Saturday at Gray Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Pat Sease Scholarship Fund, Lander Foundation, Box 6004, Lander University, Greenwood, S.C. 29649.

Brian Capps GREENVILLE Christopher Brian Capps, 23, of 121 Trafalgar Road, died Dec. 20, 1997. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of Furman Lee and Sandra Fagan Capps. He was a student at University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a graduate of Clemson University and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

He was a member of Traveler's Rest United Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to his parents of Greenville, are his grandmother, Edna Garrett Capps of Greenville; and his fiancee, Shannon Dominick of Greenwood. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, with the Rev. Don Hope officiating.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society of Greenville County, 113 Mills Greenville, S.C. 29605.

0 Terry Hlmellck, Burleson, Texas Ruth Whtte, New York George Brooks, 200 Chruch St, Honea Path Home (then called Orphanage) arriving the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, 1915. Dr. Smith graduated from Connie Maxwell School in 1926 and entered Furman University, where he was a member of the All-State Basketball Team and served as president of the student body. He graduated in 1930.

Having worked at Connie Maxwell during his college summers, he joined the staff officially as field representative. He later became associate superintendent, assistant superintendent, and in July 1946 was named superintendent (now called president) succeeding the late Dr. A.T. Jamison. Dr.

Smith received graduate training at the New York School of Social Work and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Furman. He served as chief executive of Connie Maxwell for 30 years, retiring July Retaining an office on campus, he remained an ambassador for the ministry until his death. Dr. Smith formerly served as president of the Southeastern Child Care Association, the Southern Baptist Child Care Executives, and the South Carolina Social Welfare Reform. He had served on the executive advisory panel of the Child Welfare League and was appointed by the president as a member of the White House Conference on Children and Youth in the 1950s and '60s.

He had been an active participant in the Group Child Care Consultant Services at the University of North Carolina School of Social Work. He served as president, of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1958 and held the record of the longest span of continuous membership at Connie Maxwell Baptist Church, seventy-eight years, where he became a member in 1919. There he formerly Lucy Watson BRADLEY Lucy Grace Smith Watson, of 204 Five Notch Road, wife of Ozzie Watson died Dec. 19, 1997, at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Monticello, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Lucy Pope Smith.

She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Club of Wisdom, Women's Aid Society No. 87, ML Pisgah Chapter 0.S. No. 418, Ladies Adult Sunday School Class, an original member of Breezewood Community Club, and past treasurer of Senior Missionary Society.

I to served as deacon, Sunday School director and teacher, training union director, and he was a member of the church choir for a number of years. He formerly served as trustee of Greenwood School District 50 and served on numerous civic and service boards. He was past president and longest serving member of the Greenwood Rotary Club where he was named Paul Harris Fellow. He formerly served as director and president of the Greenwood Gub and as district governor. In August, 1995, Dr.

Smith received the Order of the Palmetto from the governor for his many years of tireless service. Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are three daughters, June S. Summerall of Aiken, Jeanie Elizabeth Mitchell of Greenwood and Linda S. Holt of Hemdon, seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m.

today at Connie Maxwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Kauffmann, Dr. J. Chad Collins, the Rev. Booker Bagby and the Rev.

Henry Summerall officiating. Private entombment will be in Edgewood Memorial Mausoleum. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be Maxie Moorehead, E.C. Black-well, Larry Weese, Jack Cauley, Wayne Taylor, Steve Shiflet, John Sherriff, John Tollison, Bobby Wines, Joe Mahon and Greg Bullard.

Honorary Escort will be Dr. Don Johnson, Boykin Curry, Carl Brock, the Rev. Dan Compton, Dr. Ron Berry, Ben Davis, M.J. Rhodes, James Parson, George Teasley, Dr.

George Parsons, Miller Murphy, Dr. George Cone, Leon Patterson and John Faris. The family received friends Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home. The family requests flowers be omitted. A special fund was established in 1996 by the alumni board of Connie Maxwell to honor Dr.

Smith and was named Sam Smith Heritage Endowment. Memorial gifts to this fund will be placed in a perpetual account with the principal remaining intact and only interest used to benefit operations of the home. Ruth S. White NEW YORK Mrs. Ruth Smith White, of 720 Lenox Apartment 13-1, widow of Carlyle While died Dec. 16, 1997, in New York City. She was a daughter of the late Herbert and Annie Smith of Greenwood.

Surviving are three daughters; two sisters, Mrs. Dollie M. Stewart of Philadelphia and Ida Mae Smith of Greenwood; a brother, James K. Smith of Greenwood; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family is at the home in New York Citv.

Arrangements will be announced by Parks Funeral Home. Edna Frick ABBEVILLE Marion Edna Frick, 88, of 117 Ellis widow of E.V. Frick, died Dec. 9, 1997, at her home. Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Authur Franklin and Minnie Lee Tinsley Drake.

She was the retired owner and operator of Frick Finance Co. in Ware Shoals. She was a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. Surviving are a son, Harry V. Frick of Snellville, a sister, Earline Drake Highsmith of Abbeville; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Dec. 1 1 at Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. George Wilson officiating. Burial was in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Shoals Junction.

Charles Godfrey WHJJAMSTON Charles Alfred Godfrey, 82, of 11 Glenwood husband of Goldie Keller Godfrey, died Dec. 18, 1997, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late James Olen and Nancy Mary Cooper Godfrey.

He was retired from Fiber Industries and a member of Crossroads Assembly of God in Williamston. Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are two daughters, Barbara Anne Friddle of Conestee and Nancy Elizabeth Gosnell of Lexington; two brothers, Boyd Godfrey of High Shoals, N.C., and Gordon Godfrey of Iva; three sisters, Addie Lou Bailey and Ruby Smith, both of Greenville, and Frances Duncan of Greenwood; five grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Gray Mortuary in Pelzer with the Rev. Raymond Kennedy and Mr.

Charles Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. The family is at the home. ijd tb Reports: Comedian partying before death CHICAGO (AP) Comedian Chris Farley, who for years struggled with an excessive lifestyle, went on drinking binges in the days before his death, newspapers reported Saturday. Farley, 33, was seen drinking with his brother, John, at an upscale Chicago bar early Wednesday.

Employees of the Hunt Club said the former "Saturday Night Live" star arrived about 1:30 a.m. and drank whiskey-and-Cokes. "He looked really bad," waitress Laura Berry told the New York Post. "He was very drunk and he was hyper." A patron at another bar, Bill Watts, told the Chicago Sun-Times that he saw Farley there last week, and Farley was "totally out of it." "He walked past me not aware of anything, and his mouth kept opening and closing like nothing I've ever seen," Watts said. ni 3V.

Reuben Chabel Fund or sbecial Concert pianist dead at 73 LOS ANGELES (AP) Concert pianist Lisa Jura Golabek, an Austrian-born Jewish child prodigy who fled the Nazis when she was a teen, died Dec. 12- She was 73. She earned an audition to the Royal Academy of Music in London and later played the piano for soldiers at the Howard Hotel. She moved to Paris after the war and met her first husband, Michel Golabek. The couple emigrated to the United States where Mrs.

Golabek taught music. Her daughters, duo pianists Mona Golabek and Renee Golabek Kaye, have recorded Such works as the Elephant" and "The Mother Goose Suite" with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and Lalo Schifrin.
