"Portraits will likely be made at the McCormick EMS building at 212 Augusta St. Extension." The dive team began training in July 1999 at the Clarks Hill Dam on Lake Thurmond under the instruction of Scott Sherman, deputy director of the Columbia County (Ga.) Emergency Management Agency. Team members purchased their own scuba gear, including wet suits, fins, masks and weight belts, but they do have access to a midsized bass boat purchased by the sheriff's department from DNR. "Personal equipment cost us thousands of dollars apiece," Dea-son said. "We're hoping this fundraiser will help us pay for extra air tanks and other equipment used for -rescue and recovery operations, as well as additional training expenses.

LOUIS (AP) Executives at BridgestoneFirestone Inc. had little time to rejoice after reaching a tentative agreement with thousands of tire workers threatening to strike: The company's woes aren't over yet United Steelworkers of America and the Nashville-based tire company announced a Labor Day agreement that would keep nine of 28 U.S. factories pumping out badly needed tires. Starting Wednesday, congressional hearings will scrutinize the company for the production of tires allegedly linked to 88 U.S. traffic deaths.

Lawmakers hope to learn when company executives knew about the defects. A federal investigation continues even while the tire giant works to replace 6.5 million recalled tires. Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Adrninistration warned that an additional 1.4 million tires could be dangerous and should be replaced. Another recall effort was set to begin in Venezuela, where officials say they want to hold the tire maker and Ford Motor Co. criminally responsible for 46 fatal accidents.

Yet things could have become far worse for the company. Throughout the weekend, workers at plants in Tennessee, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Ohio, Indiana and Arkansas were poised to strike. Today is Tuesday, Sept. 5, the 249th day of 2000. There are 117 days left in the year.
