is is On Sunday, July 21, 2002 The Index-Journal, Greenwood, S.C. DEATHS AND FUNERALS Thomas Chiles Dendy, age nearly 79, retired Electrical Engineer, died peacefully at home on Friday 19, 2002 of lung cancer. He had chosen to have no intervention for the malady, a decision which was never son of the late Robert Lites Dendy of Troy (lower County, SC) and the late Zelene Mutelle Sullivan Dendy (native of Mountville, Laurens SC), he was born at the family homestead, historically known as the Troy Hotel and Park Hotel, in the little town (Troy, SC) founded by his great-grandfather Capt. Robert W. Lites.

He was a great of Dr. Thomas Benjamin Dendy, M.D. of Abbeville and great-greatgrandson of Charles Dendy (Il), with whom "Dendy Corner: on the Abbeville Town Square originated. His maternal great-great-grandfather Hewlett Sullivan (1763-1830) represented Greenville District in the S.C. House and Senate, and was an ex officio Trustee of the S.C.

College (now University of S.C.). Mr. Dendy finished Troy Grammar School (7 grades, 2 rooms) and graduated in 1940 from Greenwood (consolidated) High School, Greenwood S.C., at which time the Troy students had to be bussed eighteen miles each way. His extraordinary value as a Registered Professional Engineer lay partly in the fact that he began his multi career as an Electrician's Helper, made his way up to Master Electrician, and worked successfully in the fields of electrical contracting, electrical wholesaling, and electrical drafting. Just prior to entering the Army in August 1943, he was a Journeyman Electrician who basically ran his widowed aunt's Electrical Contracting business.

Overseas his Wartime military service was Corps of Engineers, serving with SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force). At "SHAEF Main" in Versailles, France he was Electrician in charge of both the Trianon Hotel (with all of SHAEF's important departments and high-ranking Officers) and the Villa where Supreme Commander Eisenhower and Deputy Supreme Commander Sir Arthur Tedder had their offices. At "SHAEF in Rheims, France, age 21, he was Chief Electrician over electricians from two other Engineering outfits plus a number of civilian French electricians as they renovated and rewired the boys' technical school where Eisenhower would have his next Headquarters and where, unexpectedly, German Surrender would soon be signed on May 7, 1945. At "SHAEF Main" in Frankfurt, Germany's huge I.G.Farben office building, he supervised electrical renovation of major proportions, with fifty or sixty German electricians under him, none of whom spoke English or French. Still in Frankfurt-am-Main but with SHAEF having disbanded in July 1945, he was, age 22, made Chief Electrician for headquarters Command of USFET (U.S.Forces European Theater) on Nov.

2, 1945. By Nov. 6th he was in charge of eighty-five German electricians and nine G.I.'s. After WWII he became a Master Electrician, then went into Electrical Wholesaling and subsequently Electrical Drafting (with the fine old McPherson Co. of Greenville, where he eventually headed the Electrical Engineering Not until after marriage in 1953, age 30, had he undertaken to become an Electrical Engineer, studying at night through the only source available to him: the very reputable International Correspondence Schools.

A natural in his field, with an enviable, practical background, he had no difficulty in passing the rigid and lengthy examinations to become a Registered Professional Engineer. In 1965-1966 he was the on-site Engineer in charge of electrical constructions when Daniel International Corp. built in Belgium the first fiberglass manufacturing plant on the European Continent (one existed in Sweden but none on the Continent). The electricians held him in high esteem and were the only trade not to strike on that job. From February 1968, for over 3 years, he owned and operated Dendy Engineering Company with his office first in the historic old Masonic Temple Building (where City Hall now stands) and later above the very well-known Carpenter Bros.

Drugstore on South Main Street. He closed the firm to accept a position with Greenville's Daniel Construction Company (later Fluor-Daniel, now Fluor From 1977-1983 he was closely involved with both design and construction of the fabulous King Abdul Aziz Airport, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, working on this project in Saudi Arabia and Essen, Germany (in conjunction with the German firm Hochtief and California's Ralph M. Parsons Beginning in 1979, he was a member of the Greenville County Civil Defense Board until it merged with EMS in 1982. Both professionally and personally, he was most highly regarded. His broad technical and supervisory experience as an Army electrician in England, France and Germany proved an education of inestimable worth and helped greatly to make him a valuable Engineer, especially on -term assignments in Belgium, Germany, and Saudi Arabia but also in his other European contacts.

After twentytwo years with Fluor-Daniel Corporation he retired at the end of May 1993, age nearly 70, with the rank of Principal Engineer. He was widely known as a true Southern Gentleman, a walking encyclopedia, and an authority on the National Electrical Code. Brought up as an Associate Reformed Presbyterian, he was a man of sterling integrity and Christ-like humility. He knew the Bible, he believed it, and he lived it. He was genuine, selfless, peace-loving, and self-sacrificing, with admirable self-control.

As was written of his great-great-grandfather by the latter's pastor, "Help, Lord, for The godly man ceaseth." He is survived by his wife, Jane, whom he had known all his life; a son Jim; a daughter Carolyn, wife of Rev. Leland R. Beaudrot; a son Frederick, his wife Barbara S. Dendy, their son Robert Sharpe Dendy, 13, the only grandchild all of Greenville SC; and the deceased's only brother, Charles Sullivan "Sully" Dendy of Georgia; a niece, Ginger Dendy of Georgia; and numerous cousins. Friends and acquaintances are invited to a Celebration of his Life, with sharing of thoughts and memories, on Saturday, July 27, 12:30 PM in Fluor's Center cafeteria at 100 Fluor-Daniel Drive (enter Fluor-Daniel Drive from Webb Drive).

The service will be led by Dr. Clyde T. McCants, former pastor of the Greenville ARP Church. Please, no children. The family is at the residence, 107 Wedgewood Drive, Greenville, SC, 29609.
