Oregon Farm Road bridge to be replaced Surround yourself with more than 300 years of history at Ninety Six National Historic Site's "Lifeways of the Cherokee Indians and Colonial Settlers." Experience colonial life through an authentic encampment. Learn about Cherokee Indians as Rob Rambo portrays Little Carpenter, the Cherokee Peace Chief.

"Meet" Robert Gouedy, the first Indian Trader of Ninety Six, as portrayed by Durham Hunt. Discover the history of the Scots-Irish in the area during a presentation by Dr. William Brockington of USCA. Listen to colonial music echo throughout the camps. Laugh and learn as Faire Wynds performs as an 1 8th century traveling show.

Visit with reenactors portraying British soldiers, militia, Indian traders, and colonial families. Learn about colonial women and daily home life with a presentation by Common Enjoy special Park ranger-led tours. Listen to tales of African slaves by Kitty Wilson-Evans. Have fun with special kids' activities, crafts, and games. Hear the muskets echo across the battlefields.

The free event will be Saturday and Sunday at the Historic Site The park is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with events from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m.

to 3 p.m. on Sunday. This event is presented every other year. The U.S. National Park features two Revolutionary War battlefields, the original earthen 1781 Star Fort, an authentic 1700s log cabin, museum, ten-minute introductory film, Visitor Center with bookstore, small picnic area, and much more.

Come spend the day discovering Ninety Six National Historic Site for yourself. The 989-acre Park is located two miles south of the Town of Ninety Six on Highway 248. In conjunction with the park event, the Town of Ninety Six will have its annual Town Wide festival starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday. There wiull be yard sale vendors, crafts for sale, food, and participation from local merchants. The Town Wide Festival is sponsored by the Historic Ninety Six Development Association (H96DA). There will also be things to do at the Ninety Six Town Park on Saturday which feature pets from the Greenwood Animal Shelter, crafts, Chic-Fil-A games, a giant slide, music and Master's RV Show. For easy access to and front the events, there will be a van shuttle between the Ninety Six square, Town Park and the Historic Site.

Pending delays because of weather and other factors, the new bridge should be opened by July 1 Because of low traffic volume and to minimize impact to property owners, the road will be closed during construction. The detour will use S.C. 246, Old Highway 246 (a county road) and Siloam Church Road (S-24-101). The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SC-DOT) began work Tuesday to replace the bridge over Big Rock Creek on Oregon Farm Road near Ninety Six in Greenwood County. Replacement is necessary because of the bridge's condition, with .32 percent of the timber piles deteriorated or spliced.

MCAA to meet The Municipal Court Administration Association will have its spring meeting April 18 at the Columbia Conference Center. Topics include automated parking ticket systems, victim's assistance funds and traffic court. Vets coalition to meet There will be a meeting of the Greenwood County Coalition of Veterans Organizations will be 5 p.m.

Campaign promotes construction awareness The Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation (UGDC) and the City of Greenwood recognize that the orange barrels and large pieces of construction equipment that will be seen throughout Uptown in 2008 might not seem very appealing, but it's all part of a plan to improve Uptown Greenwood. Uptown Greenwood is launching an awareness campaign to better inform the public and Uptown merchants of the construction schedule. "All of the construction is a concerted effort to implement the City Center Master Plan," said UGDC Manager Angie Jones. In addition, the resurfacing of Main Street from Seaboard Avenue to Court Avenue was recently completed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation the week of March 17-21. Construction is scheduled to begin on the Main Street pedestrian crosswalks the week of April 28. Construction for this particular project should last 60 days. The City's goal is to keep Greenwood traffic in the area flowing throughout the crosswalk project. See Construction, page 10 Local officials representing South Carolina's cities and towns were at The State House in Columbia March 25 advocating for The Town of Ninety Six's interests with General Assembly members.

Mayor Arvest Turner, Mayor Pro Tem Steve Turner and Town Councilman Harold met with Sens. John Drummond and Billy Odell at the State House to talk about several hot-button issues, including passing comprehensive tax reform rather than a stop-gap local spending cap and overhauling the state's outdated annexation laws. "South Carolina's annexation laws are keeping local governments from economic growth and success," Mayor Turner said. "We wanted to make sure our delegation in the General Assembly has the whole picture, from city residents as well as business leaders, when debating and voting on this issue." Turner said South Carol ina's cities and towns are critical to the economic success of the state. He added the Town of Ninety Six's ability to provide a positive quality of life for its resident is key to the competitiveness of South Carolina in a global market.
