There is no charge for running items involving community activities, weddings, engagements. obituaries, Anniversaries of 50 years or greater and birthdays of children 1-10 years old. We will print photographs accompanying such announcements free of charge. We ask that you submit items well in advance of the desired date of publication. Items appear on a space-available basis since there is no charge.

Photographs may also be submitted to the newspaper for publication. They should be clear, in focus and of proper exposure. People in the photographs should be clearly identified with full names. Include the name and number of a contact person. The latest an item can be submitted is noon on Thursday.

Elizabeth "Betty" Emerson Riddle retired to her heavenly home Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 from NHC Healthcare.

Predeceased by her husband, Jack D. Riddle, and beloved daughter of Sophie Cobb Emerson and Guy Barmore Emerson, Betty was a lifelong resident of Hodges. She was the Town Clerk and Secretary and was involved in every celebration special favorite was the Christmas Singing at the Gazebo. Speaking, of the Gazebo, she wrote an article for almost every issue the Ninety Six Star newspaper. The articles in her "From the Gazebo" series were anecdotes and newsworthy items concerning her family and friends.

Betty graduated from Lander College in 1949 and began teaching English and Latin at Greenwood High School. She remained close to her alma mater. and was active as an alumnus. With the Greenwood School District, where she taught for over 35 years, Betty was involved in many things other than teaching and became an integral part of the high school lives of hundreds of students, many of whom still maintain contact with her. She was active with the school yearbooks and was secretary of the Athletic Department.

Betty's major athletic post high school favorite was Clemson Tiger Football. She loved nothing better than to gather "on the hill with friends and family to tailgate before the games. After her retirement from school, Betty became a dearly loved employee of Gatewood Racquet Club.

Although she didn't play tennis, she soon learned everything about the game and its players and became the best cheerleader. for all of them. Betty was a staunch Democrat and helped with many campaigns she loved a good ole stump rally. In fact, Betty loved parties of all kinds and every holiday that rolled around, she would find a way to celebrate. She also loved bridge parties and probably hosted as many as she attended.

On the Board of Directors for Cokesbury College for many years, Betty was always helping to promote the college and favorite event was the yearly Christmas Celebration held there. Betty was an active leader in the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Hodges Cemetery Association. As an artist, she painted coats of arms for many families. An avid historian, Betty joined with Dr. Joseph P.

Stukes every summer to lead a group (sometimes twice a summer) on learning expeditions all over Eastern and Western Europe as well as to the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. She loved Betty Riddle these travels and often spoke to various church and social groups about them. Within her beloved Hodges Presbyterian Church, she was everything from elder to deacon to choir member, and Sunday School teacher. As an active member of Presbyterian Women and Trinity Presbytery, she represented many, as the Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. Betty Riddle will be remembered in many ways as mother, mother-in law, grandmother, great-grandmother, hostess, mentor, confidante, teacher, companion, and most of all, as friend.

Betty leaves behind a son, James "Butch" Emerson Riddle, her granddaughter Angie Riddle Ellis (with husband Jeff), and great-grandchildren Madison Faye Ellis and Tristan Andrew Ellis, who are receiving family and friends at Betty's home in Hodges. The service, with The Rev. Bob Piephoff and The Rev. Dr. John Livingston, was Wednesday, Oct.

22, at Hodges Presbyterian Church with interment at Hodges Cemetery. Following will be a celebration of the life of Betty Riddle at the church social hall. Pallbearers were Rogers Cobb, Ronnie Hannah, Otto McDonald, Al Nickles, Phil Nickles, Buck Smith, Chip Tinsley, and Coleman Williamson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hodges Presbyterian Church, NHC Healthcare, and the Hodges Cemetery Association.
